Southern Methodist University’s head volleyball coach, Sam Erger, has been suspended for two games due to a violation involving impermissible communication, as confirmed by a university spokesperson. This self-imposed suspension by SMU Athletics occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured wins against Colorado State and UC Davis. In the match against Colorado State, the team triumphed in four sets, with sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis standing out by recording her first double-double, which included 22 kills and 14 digs. The Mustangs also defeated UC Davis in five sets.
Erger returned to coaching on September 2 for a match against TCU, where the team lost in five sets; Davis again led the team with 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija made a notable debut with 13 kills.
Erger has been at the helm of the SMU volleyball program since February 2022 and has guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Mustangs are preparing to compete against the University of San Diego, with the upcoming match set to be streamed on ESPN+.
