TCU Athletics has fully restored media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, concluding a dispute that began after the newspaper reported on a locker room altercation. This conflict arose following coverage of an incident that led to the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields.
On September 4, TCU confirmed the restoration of access, citing productive discussions that resolved the differences between the university and the newspaper. TCU expressed respect for the Star-Telegram as an independent news source and indicated a desire to move forward with the season. Jim Barnes, a representative from TCU, announced on social media that reporter Steven Johnson and his team have regained full standing.
The dispute originated from a report by Johnson published on August 18, detailing tensions in the locker room and alleging that coaches failed to address the situation adequately. The report mentioned that head coach Sonny Dykes was not aware of the severity of the issues among players.
TCU officials stated that the revocation of credentials was due to alleged threats against sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who was punched by Fields. The incident, which occurred on August 13, left Ezukanma with serious injuries, including a brain bleed, according to an official report.
Fields turned himself in to Tarrant County police on August 30, facing charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, and was released after posting a $50,000 bond.
