Texas Tech improved to 3-0 and opened Big 12 play at 1-0 with a 28-26 victory over No. 22 Houston. The Red Raiders stopped quarterback Conner Weigman and the Cougars near the goal line on a late possession to preserve the win.
Houston built a 10-0 advantage while Texas Tech’s offense and defense had early problems. The defense improved after halftime, overcoming several long Houston drives. Adam Trick registered two sacks, and returning All-American A.J. Holmes Jr. had one more. Trey White, a defensive end who transferred from San Diego State, played his first game for Texas Tech after recovering from a knee injury and sacked Weigman.
Defensive back Brenden Jordan also returned after sitting out the opening two games for an internal rules violation. Coach Joey McGuire said White and Jordan were important contributors as Texas Tech replaces multiple defensive starters from last season who went to the NFL. McGuire said White was not fully healthy and might have played more than planned.
He said the team is “still finding ourselves” and, when asked if the defense could equal the 2025 group, replied, “Give me two more games.” He expects improvement as the season continues and wants White healthy and Jordan on the field.
