A 35-year-old man died after a Sherman police officer shot him late Wednesday, Oct. 28, inside a house on East Churchill Way, in the 600 block, police said, after the man got hold of a gun that two other people in the house had been trying to keep away from him. Texas Rangers are in charge of the investigation.

Police Chief Jason Jeffcoat identified the man as Christopher Anderson at a news conference Thursday afternoon, according to KXII and KTEN.

What police say happened

Jeffcoat said the department got a 911 call from the home at about 11:07 p.m. According to the chief, the person who called said he and a second person had gotten a gun away from Anderson, who had threatened to hurt himself.

A single officer responded. Jeffcoat said the officer could hear people inside yelling for help as he walked up to the door. He went in, found Anderson wrestling with the two people for control of the gun, called Anderson by name and told him several times to drop it, the chief said.

"As the struggle continued, Anderson gained possession of the firearm and the other two individuals lost control of the firearm," Jeffcoat said, as quoted by KXII. "It was at this point an officer involved shooting occurred."

Anderson died at the scene. KXII reported the shooting happened at about 11:15 p.m. Police said the officer was not hurt, that Anderson and the two others were the only people in the house, and that the public is not in danger. The chief said he did not know whether those two people were Anderson's relatives or friends; police have not released their names.

The investigation

Jeffcoat said the Rangers are handling the case in line with the department's established procedures. The officer, who has not been named, is on administrative leave until the investigation is complete; KTEN described the leave as routine.

"We recognize the gravity of what occurred, and our thoughts are with Mr. Anderson's family during this incredibly difficult time," Jeffcoat said, according to KTEN. KXII reported the chief also said the department was deeply concerned about the officer, who in his account had only seconds to decide how to protect the people in the home.

A statement from Anderson's family was not available. Police said they will share more information as it is confirmed.
