Women Rock drops plan to rebuild on East Houston Street after costs climbed, and will look for a building to buy

The breast cancer nonprofit broke ground last November on a new office where fire destroyed its old one. Its founder told the Herald Democrat that rising costs made a loan for the project impractical.

Women Rock, the Sherman nonprofit that helps people with breast cancer, has set aside its plan to put up a new office on the East Houston Street lot where its old building burned, and is instead looking for an existing building it can afford to buy.

Founder and CEO LuAnn Daniel explained the change in an interview published Tuesday by the Herald Democrat. A fire in February 2025 ruined the group's former facility at 225 E. Houston St., the paper reported. What was left on the site was hauled away in under two months, and a groundbreaking for a replacement on the same site was held in November 2025.

Between May and December of that year, construction costs rose so sharply that building no longer penciled out, Daniel told the Herald Democrat. She said neither she nor the board wanted to borrow money for office space, so the money set aside for the project is sitting in an account earning interest while the organization searches for a property within its budget.

She told the paper the search could take a while.

For now the group works out of the Texoma Council of Governments building at 1117 Gallagher Drive, Suite 240, in Sherman. Its website lists office hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

What the group does

Women Rock's website says it helps people get breast imaging and biopsies, offers financial help with everyday needs during treatment, runs support for survivors and caregivers, and takes breast health education on the road. It lists a service area covering nine Texas counties, including Grayson, Collin, Fannin and Cooke, and six counties in southern Oklahoma.

Daniel told the Herald Democrat the organization serves 400 to 500 people a year, provides about 1,200 services and reaches more than 2,000 people with education. She said women under 45 are the group most likely to contact Women Rock first.

Fundraiser total still being counted

Bras for a Cause, the group's fundraiser and awareness night, was held Oct. 24 at the Texoma Event Center and honored close to 40 survivors, according to the Herald Democrat, which put attendance near 400. The program had both a live auction and a silent one, plus a segment in which men wear decorated bras to raise money.

Daniel told the paper the group hopes the event brought in about $125,000, but a final count was not ready because its bookkeeper had been ill.

Donations, including toward a future building, can be made online at womenrockinc.org, by phone at 903-487-2528 or in person at the Gallagher Drive office, according to the group.
