SHERMAN, Texas – Thomas James Hurtt, 33, of Hewitt, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for a drug trafficking violation in the Eastern District of Texas, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release. U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced that Hurtt pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl.
U.S. District Judge Michael Truncale imposed the 180-month sentence on September 4, 2026.
According to information presented in court, law enforcement officers with the Cross Roads Police Department responded to a report of an overdose victim in Denton County on February 21, 2024. The victim was treated with Naloxone and transported to a hospital, where they eventually recovered. Further investigation identified Hurtt as the supplier of the counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl.
The release states that this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative described as marshaling the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from perpetrators of violent crime.
