Construction crews are currently breaking up the concrete foundations that support existing light fixtures in downtown Sherman. This phase of the project involves underground work to prepare the ground for the installation of new poles, according to Sarah McRae, the Sherman tourism and Main Street manager.
The team recently finished the groundwork on the Lamar Street side of the square and has shifted its focus to the Travis Street sector. This transition has resulted in the removal of a row of parking spaces, creating challenges for some local visitors.
Paul Richards, who visits the square daily, noted that the blocked-off area makes it difficult to find parking, particularly for individuals with disabilities who rely on service dogs.
McRae acknowledged the frustration caused by the temporary loss of parking but emphasized that the final goal is to improve safety for pedestrians. She explained that better lighting is intended to make people feel more comfortable walking between businesses or to their vehicles after dark. The manager stated that the improvements are designed to enhance the experience of moving around the square at night.
