Sherman will host The Colony this Friday night for the first football game at the new Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex and Ed Hunt Track. The event marks the official opening of the facility, which replaces Bearcat Stadium as the home for Sherman high school athletics.
The move concludes an era for the old stadium, which stood near Highway 75 for 85 years. District officials described the new venue as a modern upgrade designed to support the growing community and schools. The complex features a five-story structure with 8,000 total seats, including 5,000 on the home side. Of those home-side seats, 1,700 are equipped with padding.
New amenities include a state-of-the-art press box, a jumbotron, and expanded parking areas. The design also addresses previous concerns about weather exposure. Officials noted that the layout allows fans to move from sun to shade within approximately 30 minutes, a change from the conditions at the former venue.
While the new stadium brings excitement, the transition has generated mixed emotions for some long-time community members. One Sherman official acknowledged the shift but emphasized the necessity of moving forward. Another individual, who attended preschool near the old field and later returned as an athletic director, expressed pride in the facility's history while noting the significant upgrade in quality.
Pieces of Bearcat Stadium history will be preserved at the 50-yard line of the new stadium, allowing fans to view artifacts from the previous location. District leaders stated that the investment aims to position Sherman as a regional destination and support future growth northward.
