Vance Govan, a student at Sherman Middle School, experienced a medical emergency during a football practice session when the high Texas temperatures affected his health. Govan told KTEN that he initially felt fine but soon struggled to breathe and could barely stand.
A teammate noticed his condition and alerted the coaching staff. Coaches quickly recognized the severity of the situation and moved to assist him. They placed Govan in an ice bath, administered electrolytes, and contacted emergency services.
Coach Steven Wade described shifting into a protective role during the incident. He stated that he views the approximately 350 athletes in his program as his own children and does not want to see any of them harmed.
Govan’s mother, Courtney Govan, was not present at the field when the episode occurred. The school contacted her immediately, providing reassurance that her son would be okay despite her initial fear.
Upon arriving at the hospital, she found Vance surrounded by his coach, a trainer, and another staff member. These individuals remained with him in his room until he was released from medical care.
