Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang visited a Coherent semiconductor site in Sherman on Tuesday to mark a significant expansion of the facility. The event drew federal, state, and local officials alongside company leaders to celebrate the growth of what is described as the world’s largest-volume production plant for 6-inch indium phosphide.
Coherent CEO Jim Anderson announced that the project has secured $650 million in funding, including a $50 million grant from the federal CHIPS Act. This investment supports a multiyear partnership between Coherent and Nvidia, which includes a $2 billion commitment from the chipmaker. The expansion will increase the manufacturing footprint to 140,000 square feet and quadruple production capacity for the lasers and optical components used in AI systems.
During the ceremony, Huang stated that artificial intelligence could drive a reindustrialization of the United States by creating diverse employment opportunities, ranging from advanced technical roles to construction positions. Coherent estimates the Sherman project will generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. Anderson emphasized that the site serves as a critical demonstration of how domestic infrastructure can support the rapid growth of AI technology.
