Coherent and Nvidia have officially broken ground on a $650 million expansion at their Sherman facility. The project aims to produce lasers, optical components, and semiconductors in the world's first 6-inch indium phosphide fabrication plant.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Coherent CEO Jim Anderson, and Sherman Mayor Shawn Temann. The event highlighted the city's growing reputation as the "Silicon Prairie" due to its expanding technology sector.
Once fully operational, the new facility will quadruple the company's wafer production capacity. The expansion is also expected to support 550 jobs at full production levels. This development marks a significant step in the region's advanced optics manufacturing capabilities.
This announcement follows a series of recent developments in Sherman's industrial landscape. In March 2026, news was reported regarding Coherent and Nvidia bringing advanced optics manufacturing to the city. Prior to that, in February 2026, the Wall Street Journal toured the Sherman factory responsible for making Apple's chips. Additionally, Texas Instruments opened a 300mm wafer fab in Sherman in December 2025.
