BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has officially committed to the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision comes as he is eligible for an extra season of college basketball due to a temporary injunction that allows the 2022 recruiting class another year of eligibility.

Edwards spent three seasons at SMU after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he played only 14 games. During his time with the Mustangs, he contributed significantly under two head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield. His most effective season was last year, where he participated in 28 games despite late-season injuries.

He posted averages of 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game while shooting 47.4% from the field. His defensive skills were highlighted by his selection to the All-Conference defensive team in the ACC, where he averaged 2.4 steals during the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals in the following season.

Although there was interest from SMU to keep him on the roster, Edwards opted to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are looking to strengthen their lineup after finishing the last season with a record of 21-16 and missing the NCAA Tournament, making Edwards' addition a key move for the upcoming winter season.
