The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant decision regarding their quarterback lineup for the preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Just 90 minutes prior to the game, the team announced that Sam Howell would start, while Joe Milton is expected to play the entire second half.

This decision is noteworthy as Milton had primarily taken second-team reps during training camp and was designated as the backup quarterback on the unofficial depth chart. Coach Brian Schottenheimer had previously indicated that the competition was open, but Howell's selection as the starter suggests a shift in the team's assessment of both players.

The Cowboys traded a sixth-round pick for Milton last year, but it appears he has not met expectations, allowing Howell the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities first. Howell has prior starting experience, having played 17 games in the 2023 season, ranking among the top ten in big-time throw percentage while also leading in turnover-worthy plays.

As the Cowboys gear up for the 2026 NFL season, there is a pressing need to solidify the backup quarterback position, especially with the team's ambitions to contend. Owner Jerry Jones has indicated a readiness to pursue trades or sign free agents to strengthen the roster, highlighting the importance of the upcoming preseason games in shaping the team's future.

Howell's performance in the first half against Seattle will be closely watched as he emerges as a frontrunner for the backup role, a development that was unexpected before the game.
